Our Favourite Things to do Around Edmonton This Summer
Even though hair treatment is our game, we like to be out and about during the warm months. Here are our favourite things going on in Edmonton this summer.
Our goal has always been to help you look and feel your best. Whether through our Ultragraft systems or preventing hair loss intelligently with our hair analysis test. We’re pretty good at it and we’ve been serving the community for nearly half a century.
Now that summer is here, we thought we’d shine some light on some of our favourite things to do within our Edmonton community. At the end of the day, we like to enjoy ourselves too and there’s no better time than when the sun is shining. Here are some of the places you can find us this summer!
Catch a Game at Commonwealth Stadium
Commonwealth Stadium has been a staple in Edmonton sports and culture since the late ‘70s. Some of the biggest names in music history have graced the stage at Commonwealth: The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, and Pink Floyd, to name a few.
During the summer and fall, it’s a tremendous spot to catch some CFL football while you enjoy a cold beverage in the sun. The stadium is home to the CFL’s Edmonton Elks and with a full-blown tailgate party before every game, there will be no dull moments during your day at Commonwealth.
The Elks also host themed nights for most home games. Country Night, Family Day, and an Indigenous Celebration game are some of the themed nights you can expect this year. Grab some friends and get into the spirit!
Historic Attractions in Edmonton
Royal Alberta Museum
Much like our teachers told us in school, a day out can be fun and educational. The Royal Alberta Museum gives you a thorough and immersive look at the history of life Alberta. Discover the different flora and fauna that have created a rich environmental history in our province.
The Human History Hall is a fascinating tale of survival, spirituality, artistry, and resourcefulness during ancient times. Travel through time, tragedy, innovation, and world wars right up to the present day. This place is a great way to find out what makes up the rich history of Alberta, and how we got to where we are today.
There is a kids area filled with opportunities to learn in a fun, interactive environment. An exciting spot for kids (and adults) of all ages. This, in addition to a bug gallery where (if you’re not bothered by creep-crawlies) you can learn about the critical role that insects play in our environment while getting a close-up look at intriguing invertebrates.
Plus it’s nice and cool in there…
Fort Edmonton
History comes alive at Fort Edmonton Park. After a recent expansion, the park is a prime way to spend a summer day with the family. Their engaging new feature, the Indigenous People’s Experience is an inspired look at the life and history of the First Nations’ people of the area.
You can take an old-style steam engine from the entrance of the park right to the back where the Indigenous People’s Experience and the 1846 Hudson’s Bay Fort is. You can learn about the history of fur trade and live interpretations of life during that time. From there you can enjoy myriad themed restaurants, bars, cafés, and a midway packed with rides and entertainment.
The combination of green space and attractions makes Fort Edmonton one of our favourite stops this summer!
Klondike Days
Jam packed with rides, exhibitions, concerts, strange food combos, and…a beard competition? Yes indeed. Running July 21-30, K-days is Edmonton’s annual party and promises a mix of all of your classic fairground attractions and some interesting fixtures.
This year features an array of cool competitions including a ‘new foods’ competition, Alberta Strongman event, a talent show and yes, a Klondike beard contest which honours the days of the goldrush, and should be quite entertaining.
A mega-party right in the heart of Edmonton for 10 days is our idea of a perfect way to spend time this summer. You’ll need at least a couple of days to try all of the unique entries in the new foods competition, as well.
Our Favourite Spots
High Level Diner – 10912 88th Ave NW
This diner offers up the most classic diner feeling combined with unique menu items and a great selection of spirits for any time of day. The laid-back atmosphere makes this our favourite stop for brunch.
Recommended: Canadian Sushi Benny , Sea Change Prairie Fairy.
Black Dog Wooftop Patio – 10425 Whyte Ave
Head up to the roof and have a pint in the garden-esque patio overlooking Whyte Ave. The Black Dog is a top choice for before and after a game or a show. With plenty of in-house entertainment throughout the week and an inclusive environment, they always have our trust that good times will be had!
Recommended: Guinness on the roof.
Getting Out and Getting Active
Snow Valley Aerial Park
The Aerial Park Tower is a seriously unique way to get active this summer. A 15-meter high tower of elaborate obstacles that challenge your body and mind. There are several ways to get to wherever you’re going on the tower so you won’t have to take on any elements that you don’t want to. It is the most tangible version of a jungle-gym for adults but is friendly to any age group, as long as you meet the 125cm minimum height.
This awesome challenge is great for any sort of outing and is one of many attractions at Snow Valley during the summer.
Biking in the River Valley
While it’s up for debate how many months of actual nice weather we get, there’s no debating that getting on your bike and going for a rip is one of the best ways to keep active and have fun in the warm weather. Edmonton’s River Valley trail system is among the most extensive in the country and connected to over 30 parks.
There are over 160kms of trails in the River Valley system, with varying degrees of difficulty and several photo ops with the city and the river. Pack a lunch and grab some friends, because this is an adventure that you can easily stretch over a whole day!
Farmer’s Markets Around Town
Edmonton has many farmer’s markets during the summer and some that are open year-round, such as the Old Strathcona Market (Saturdays) and the Salisbury Market (Thursdays). If you’re a fan of supporting local and getting farm-to-table produce, Edmonton’s farmer’s markets are the place for you.
Plus, if you’re like us, you’ll enjoy grabbing a treat from one of hundreds of local food vendors. Our markets are one of the best ways to be involved with the community, support real people, and get your hands on great quality food and wares.
